The Border Patrol, near McAllen, Texas has been forced to release 250 migrants this week due to a lack of space to hold them.
Hundreds more could be set free in the coming days due to the shortage of room to house them.
Border Patrol typically transfers migrants to Immigration and Customs Enforcement to be processed and then placed in detention facilities in many cases.
Border Patrol agents say a recent influx of Central American families has led to the crisis.
