(California) - A moratorium has been slapped on the death penalty in California.
Governor Gavin Newsom announced the move which slams the brakes on more than 700 scheduled executions in the state.
737 inmates currently sit on California's death row.
Newsom cites high costs, racial inequalities and lack of deterrent as reasons for his decision.
More people sit on California's death row than any other state in the country.
