Chicago Police say 'Empire' actor Jussie Smollett took advantage of the pain and anger of racism to advance his career.
The actor, who is black and gay, claimed he was assaulted last month by two masked men wearing pro-President Trump hats who hurled racist and homophobic slurs.
Chicago Police Superintendent Eddie Johnson said Smollett staged he attack only to increase his salary.
Smollett is in custody after being accused of filing a false police report.
