Shareholders at McDonald's are considering a proposal at their annual meeting which could end the use of plastic straws at more than 37,000 of their locations.
Environmentalists want to ban the use of hard to recycle single use plastic straws but it may be a tough sell on McDonald's shareholders.
The McDonald's Board has encouraged against phasing out the straws saying such a move would divert resources from some of the company's other environmental initiatives.
Other ideas being considered by McDonald's: handing out straws on request or switching to biodegradable, plastic straws.
