SAN DIEGO, CA--- Not much to talk about with Wednesday night's 5-0 loss to San Diego in front of a sellout crowd, Cleveland has now been shut out 8 times this season. It was the Padres putting on their own home run derby hitting 4 solo home runs, scoring 4 of their 5 runs with the long ball. Aaron Civale was on the mound for the Guardians, making his 2nd career start against the Padres, he gave up a leadoff home run to Fernando Tatis Jr who had a fantastic night. With that leadoff home run, it was the 11th leadoff home run of Tatis' career. Civale would end up only going a little over 3 innings, giving up 5 hits and 2 home runs, a bright side from his start was that he struck out 7 Padres batters.
The 2nd home run of Civale's start would come from Manny Machado in the 3rd inning, Machado coming in Wednesday night had a .634 career slugging percentage against the Cleveland Guardians/Indians, the 5th best of ALL TIME. 2 more home runs came from Juan Soto going opposite field and Nelson Cruz with a 433 ft. dagger in the 8th inning. The Padres would score 1 one run not from a home run, with Tatis scoring on a wild pitch from Sam Hentges in the 6th. Tatis would also make a fantastic play from his new position in the outfield, Amed Rosario would rope a ground ball down the right field line in the 9th inning and rounded first. Tatis faked as if he was gong to throw the ball to 2nd, then seen that Rosario had quite a lead, he then adjusted to throw out Rosario at first. Tatis would finish the game with that great defensive play, a home run, 2 doubles, and a walk.
There was one bright spot for the Guardians, we would see Josh Naylor extend his hitting streak to 13, coming into Wednesday night's game Naylor was hitting .486 with 16 RBI on a 12 game hitting streak. That was it, the Guardians allowed 3 stolen bases, would only manage 5 hits ( all singles) and had only 1 at bat with runners in scoring position. The Guardians will play the Padres Thursday night at 8:40 and will try to avoid the series sweep.
