NEW YORK CITY, NY--- The Guardians off the back of Shane Bieber couldn't quite get things done in The Bronx, losing in the bottom of the 10th inning by a final score of 4-3. This will be the last meeting between these 2 clubs during the 2023 regular season. Clark Schmidt was the Yankee starter , coming into Wednesday night's game, opposing batters were hitting .321 off of him as a starter, giving up 13 hits per start. Schmidt would be pulled after his 4th inning of work giving up 6 hits and striking out 4 Guardians batters. 15 out of the 30 games the Guardians have played have been decided by 1 run, they were 7-8 coming into Wednesday night.
Shane Bieber would have the longest outing of a Guardians starter so far this season, going 8 innings, only giving up 5 hits and 2 runs while striking out 4 on 93 pitches. The Guardians offense would get 2 quick runs in the first inning, both 2 out RBI singles from Josh Bell and Andres Gimenez, both runs were un-earned after an Anthony Rizzo error. The Yankees got the tying run in the 9th, Willie Calhoun again coming in clutch for New York with a single on a sharp line drive to left field. That hit would secure Emmanuel Clase's 3rd blown save of the season. The winning run come from pinch hitter Jose Trevino in the 10th hitting a single to center field, allowing the free extra innings runner Oswaldo Cabrera to score.
The Guardians will come back home Friday to square of with division rival Minnesota Twins, Zach Plesac will throw his first pitch at 7:10.
