The Cleveland Guardians produced all of their runs in one inning, but were unable to maintain it in game one of a double header in Detroit, losing to the Tigers 4-3.
The Tigers took an early lead in the first inning after Nick Maton scored on Javier Baez's sacrifice fly. After a pair of scoreless innings, the Guardians scored all of their runs in the fourth inning. Jose Ramirez singled and reached second base on a fielding error. Then Josh Bell continued his surge with an RBI double, his fifth double on the road trip, scoring Ramirez. On the next pitch Oscar Gonzalez capped off the Guardians' offense with his first home run to put the Guardians up 3-1. The Tigers rallied in the fifth to tie up the score at three: Eric Haase (4-for-4) and Riley Greene (3-for-5) each singled, then scored on a pair of RBI hits between Javier Baez and Kerry Carpenter, respectively.
The Guardians had another scoring opportunity in the seventh, but with one out and runners on the corners, hit into a double play. Then with two outs in the ninth, Tyler Freeman doubled in his season debut, but got stranded. In the bottom of the ninth, James Karinchak, who finished the eighth, induced two ground outs, but allowed a walk-off home run to Kerry Carpenter after a nine-pitch at-bat, handing the Guardians their second straight loss, and the Tigers their third straight walk off win and fourth straight win overall.
Both starter pitchers, Hunter Gaddis and Matthew Boyd, finished the day allowing three runs through five innings, but each took a no-decision. Game two features starers Peyton Battenfield for Cleveland (0-0, 1.93 ERA) and Eduardo Rodriguez for Detroit (0-2, 4.50 ERA): first pitch at 4:15 PM.
