The Cleveland Guardians defeated the Tampa Bay Rays, 2-1, to take Game One of the Wild Card Series. In a stellar duel between the team's aces, Shane Bieber and Shane McClanahan pitched shutouts through the first five innings. Bieber did not allow a hit until the fourth while McClanahan limited the Guardians to three hits through that span.
Rays' Jose Siri broke the scoreless tie in the sixth with a solo home run to centerfield to put the Rays up 1-0, but their lead was short-lived. In the bottom of the frame, Amed Rosario hit his second single, then Jose Ramirez hit a two-run home run to centerfield and put the Guardians ahead 2-1. While the stadium erupted, the Rays challenged whether Amed Rosario touched second base on the home run trot. After a review that lasted several minutes, the homerun was upheld and both runs scored.
Neither pitching staff allowed another run. Bieber struck out eight batters and allowed three hits and one walk through 7 2/3 innings, and Emmanuel Clase earned the save after entering the game in the eighth inning and retiring the final four batters he faced. Other the other side, McClanahan struck out five batters and allowed seven hits but zero walks in seven innings.
The Guardians and Rays will play Game Two tomorrow with the first pitch at 12:07 PM. If the Guardians win they take the series, but if the Rays win then these teams will play a winner-take-all Game Three on Sunday at 4:07.
