CLEVELAND, OH -- The Detroit Tigers appeared to be in the driver's seat with two men out in a 4-2 game in the 8th inning with Luke Maile stepping into the batter's box. Down two strikes in the count, Maile chased a slider in the dirt that got past Detroit's catcher and rolled to the backstop. Following the three consecutive strikeouts to open the 8th inning, the Guardians rattled off six runs before the final batter of the inning was retired. Cleveland shut down the stunned Tigers in the 9th to secure a come-from-behind 8-4 win.
Steven Kwan ignited the Cleveland lineup in the 8th inning when he pulled a high fastball to left field for a ground-rule double. Amed Rosario followed up the double with a game-tying ground ball single to third base. Guardians' third baseman Jose Ramirez got jammed up as he skied a ball to left field, a ball that would drop between the Tiger's shortstop and left fielder, scoring both Kwan and Rosario. The offensive onslaught didn't end there, with rookie corner outfielder Oscar Gonzales pulling a double off the left-field wall to give Cleveland a three-run lead.
The Cleveland Guardians will have a much-awaited off-day on Thursday before beginning a three-game weekend series against the Chicago White Sox. The first pitch of the series is set for 7:10 pm ET on Friday night at Progressive Field in Cleveland, Ohio.
