Guardians Awaken Morning Bats to Take Series Against Rallying A's

Despite a rare 11:35 AM first pitch, the Cleveland Guardians defeated the Oakland Athletics, 6-3, to take three of four in the series, and six of seven meetings this season.

Cal Quantrill earned the win, allowing one run on four hits with four strikeouts in six innings. This was his ninth straight start tossing at least six innings. Emmanuel Clase picked up his 11th save with a shutout ninth inning. Cole Irvin took the loss, giving up five runs on six hits with three strikeouts in 5 2/3 innings.

The A's scored first when Ramon Laureano hit a solo home run in the first inning, but the Guardians quickly countered with three runs, starting with a historic Jose Ramirez two-run double. With it, he tied a franchise with extra-base hits and RBIs through the team's first 56 games. Owen Miller drove in Ramirez with an RBI single, one of his two hits of the game.

Amed Rosario went three-for-four and hit an RBI double in the sixth inning, while Josh Naylor added an RBI single in the same inning. In the seventh, Jose Ramirez collected his third RBI with a fielder's choice to extend the lead to 6-1. The A's cut it to 6-3 on back-to-back home runs between Christian Bethancourt and Seth Brown, but the A's did not score again as the Guardians' bullpen spoiled their rally attempt.

The Guardians went 5-2 on the homestand and improve to 29-27. Cleveland is off tomorrow ahead of a nine-game road trip starting on Tuesday at 8:40 PM with the Colorado Rockies (26-34). After that, three games apiece with the Los Angeles Dodgers and the Minnesota Twins.
