OAKLAND, CA -- The Athletics and Guardians had a wild back-and-forth bout on Friday night in the Bay Area, in a game that featured 17 total runs scored. The sizzling hot Jose Ramirez got the scoring going early with a solo shot in the top half of the first inning. Cleveland found themselves down 4-1 following a four-run first inning by the hometown Athletic, but would quickly regain the lead on an Andres Gimenez grand slam off of Frankie Montas. The Guardians were once again staring at a multiple-run deficit in the 7th inning when Cleveland retook the lead for the very last time on a Jose Ramirez RBI double followed by a 2-run homer off the bat of Josh Naylor. Cleveland held onto the lead to walk away with a 9-8 win over the Athletics.
Both starters struggled out of the gate on Friday night at the Oakland Coliseum. Oakland starter Frankie Montas was pulled after throwing five total innings, giving up five earned runs on five total hits, striking out six batters while walking four.
