CLEVELAND--Triston McKenzie has been at the major league level for a long time......I'm kidding! But if you didn't know, tonight was McKenzie's first major league start as he had 10 strikeouts and with the help of Domingo Santana's sixth-inning double, the Cleveland Indians defeated the Detroit Tigers 6-1 and McKenzie is now 1-0 as a starter.
As the Indians tweeted, welcome to Pitching U:
McKenzie's only homer given up was the first pitch changeup in the fourth inning to Will Castro. But otherwise McKenzie did his job in his major league debut with six innings pitched.
Then Domingo Santana doubled in left center, clearing the bases in the bottom of the sixth for the go-ahead RBI.
As acting manager Sandy Alomar stated at pregame Saturday night, McKenzie was only scheduled to throw up-to 85 pitches.
The Indians will have a decision to make with their pitching rotation as Mike Clevinger and Zach Plesac will be eligible to move back to Cleveland on Monday after they were optioned to Lake County for 10 days.
The Tribe will start Carlos Carrasco RHP (2-2, 3.71) on Sunday afternoon. Coverage begins at 12:05pm with the Ken Ganley Kia Tribe Insider Pregame with Chris Beeble. First pitch at 1:10pm on Newsradio WTAM 1100AM/106.9FM and on iHeartRadio on your smart device.
