BOSTON--In a game in which the Indians scored first and were up 3-0, the Red Sox not only stormed back but dominated the rest of the game as they outscored the Tribe 12-2 in five and a half innings.
The Indians got off to a good start as Kipnis, Perez and Bauers drove in runs in the first and third innings to get a jump on the AL Wild Card contending Red Sox.
But the Red Sox stormed back with a Brock Holt RBI single in the fourth. But it was the fifth inning that put the game away for Boston as Bradley had a RBI double to make the score 6-3 Boston. But it was the #9 hitter Sandy Leon who put the game on ice with a 3-run homer over the Green Monster.
The Red Sox who struggled out of the gate have now won 18 of 26 games. Meanwhile, the Tribe have fallen in seven of their last eight games and there has been no signs of a turnaround. Rick Poercello (4-4) gave up five runs in 6 2/3 innings, but is credited with the win for the Red Sox. Meanwhile Jefry Rodriguez (1-5) survived a bases loaded situation in the fourth, but it was the fifth inning that did him in as he gave up seven runs before leaving the game.
The Indians and Red Sox were the only two AL teams who played on Memorial Day. The Tribe are now 10.5 games behind first place Twins in the AL Central and 2.5 games behind the Red Sox and Oakland A's for the 2nd AL Wild Card spot. The Red Sox are 6.5 games back of the first place Yankees in the AL East and 4.5 games back of the Tampa Bay Rays for the 1st AL Wild Card spot
Should the Indians and Red Sox play on Tuesday night (90% chance of rain in Boston at game time), the Tribe will start RHP Zach Plesac who will make his major league debut. Plesac's parents will be in attendance in Boston; they are from Alaska. The Red Sox will start LHP David Price (2-2, 3.24 ERA).
