Joe Biden, It's Time To Evolve or Die

Though he hasn't even officially announced his candidacy for President Of The United States, Joe Biden's name has been in the news a lot lately- and not for the best of reasons.

The former Senator and Vice President has been inundated with allegations of unwanted physical contact with women on the campaign trail. Four women, beginning with Lucy Flores, who in a column for New York Magazine, detailed a backstage encounter with Biden during an Nevada Democratic Party rally.

In the aftermath, three other women have come forward with their own accusations.

Biden has come across as the adorable, if not a little creepy, sidekick to President Obama in his time as Vice President. However, Biden must realize that the world has changed around him. Since the #metoo movement has gained national attention, behavior that was once considered annoying or awkward is now rightfully seen as insulting and even threatening. Women are standing up for themselves on a level that hasn't been seen in history, and they have been letting the other side of the species know that that kind of close, physical contact that may have worked in previous election cycles will not work in the 2020 Presidential campaign.

The other big change from his previous campaigns is that this time, he is the one who is the candidate for the presidency, and the media scrutiny that comes with that will compare to nothing he's ever experienced- even as Vice President.

To his credit, the old dog is trying to learn some new tricks. In a video posted to Twitter, Biden confronted his previous behavior saying that he will "more mindful about respecting personal space in the future."

"Social norms are changing. I understand that, and I’ve heard what these women are saying," Biden posted. "Politics to me has always been about making connections, but I will be more mindful about respecting personal space in the future. That’s my responsibility and I will meet it."

For the sake of his Presidential aspirations and for his legacy, Biden will wise to practice what he preaches. And for the sake of everyone else, hopefully the world will accept that change. After all, what would the incentive be to change if all you will ever be judged on are your past sins?
