Expecting moms who drink a glass of wine per week while they’re pregnant are drinking enough to alter the shape of a baby’s brain. That’s the results of a new study led by Dr. Patric Kienast at the Medical University of Vienna. “Pregnant women should strictly avoid alcohol consumption,” he said.
According to the study, babies exposed to even low amounts of alcohol had a shallower right superior temporal sulcus, a part of the brain involved in cognition and language. The study looked at the brains of 24 fetuses exposed to alcohol between weeks 22 and 36 of pregnancy using MRI scans.
