Today in 1870,Ā the first African AmericanĀ was elected to US House of Representatives. Garnering more than 86% of the vote, in a special election to fill the seat for the remainder of the 41stĀ Congress, Republican Joseph Rainey was sworn in the following December. The first African American elected to the US Senate was Republican Hiram Rhodes Revels, who (in 1869) filled the seat vacated by Confederate President Jefferson Davis.
