Gov. DeWine Gives Millions To Prevent Gang Violence & Help Law Enforcement

COLUMBUS - Governor Mike DeWine announced he would award $9.9 Million to 25 local law enforcement agencies to help with staffing. A part of that $9.9 million will also go to helping gang violence.

The Lorain Police Department will receive just under $43 Thousand to launch a gang prevention initiative to stop gang-related crime. The department will also begin a youth mentoring and gang diversion program in partnership[ with Lorain Men Of CourageLorain Men Of Courage is a Lorain-based nonprofit youth mentoring organization that offers a program for at-risk youth.

The Stark County Sheriff's office will receive over 2 million dollars and will team up with Canton, Jackson Township, Alliance, Perry Township, and Massillon police departments to create the new Stark County Violent Crime Task Force. The task force will focus on gang-related violence. The multi-county task force looks to use resources not to stop only to prevent gang violence but also to stop it before it happens.

This funding comes from the American Recovery Plan Act (ARPA). Gov. Mike DeWine and the Ohio General Assembly have dedicated parts of the ARPA to addressing the issues brought to light during the pandemic and the growing threat of violent crime.
