This episode of Scrubs has plenty of silliness for the Fake Doctors, Real Friends Zach Braff and Donald Faison to go over: The Janitor’s banana hammock ban, Carla tricking the staff out to the parking lot so she can get a group picture, Donald’s Indiana Jones homage, the Todd’s insane wedgie. “I feel like this whole show is on drugs,” Donald says. Plus, was Sarah Chalke a little peeved that the writers basically told her that she looked like Gary Busey? What exactly is Beardface’s job in the hospital? And in 2006, it was all the rage to ride a mini scooter; Zach remembers tooling around the third floor of the hospital having scooter races in between scenes. “We were literally like hamsters in a cage, and that was our track,” Donald confirms.
Of course, the foremost exciting thing in this Scrubs episode is the first mention of Dr. Acula, J.D.’s vampire doctor screenplay that all of Sacred Heart Hospital is extremely excited about. Zach knows no one expected it to be anything but a throwaway joke, but it turned out to be the number one thing fans ask them about. And everytime he posts a picture on Instagram of him on a set or behind a camera, he always gets a comment: “Please tell me it’s Dr. Acula.” Donald thinks they should make it but it should be animated; Zach says that’s a great idea, since it would eliminate a lot of scheduling problems. Unless, of course, the Dr. Acula movie got the same special effects budget as Black Widow, Donald amends. “We should pitch to Kevin Feige!” Zach says, and Donald quips, “We got the bad guy for Blade! It’s Dr. Acula!”
Zach appreciates Dr. Cox’s sage advice to J.D. on this episode: “Never make assumptions based on your own perceptions.” It’s “very good Scrubs life advice for Earth,” he says; speaking for himself, he often gets anxious and neurotic about things that turn out to be nothing. “Life would be so much easier if we could stop ourselves from doing that because we suffer so much from things….that don’t have any basis in reality.” Then, fans Steven and Trina call in to ask what piece of music evokes the most emotions for them, and to ask for some guidance figuring out how to honor their newly adopted children’s heritage while not belonging to it themselves. Hear the entire hilarious and touching conversation on this episode of Fake Doctors, Real Friends.
