Viewers weren't the only people shocked by a surprising death on the most recent episode of Modern Family. Sarah Hyland took to Instagram Stories after the most recent episode, titled "Legacy," aired to reveal she didn't know her TV grandpa passed away unexpectedly in the show. She found out while watching the episode live, like everybody else.

In Wednesday's episode of Modern Family, Phil Dunphy and his dad, Frank Dunphy, spend a nice day together after the latter gets lost in the grocery store. This storyline appears to be fairly run of the mill at first, however, later in the episode Phil reveals his father has passed away from old age. In a eulogy, Phil told his family, “My dad was okay, and my takeaway from our day was, don’t miss the chance to let the people you appreciate know that.”

Hyland, however, wasn't in this episode, so, she was in for a surprise when she finally watched it live. "So I don't read scripts of the episodes of Modern Family that I'm not in, so I just found out that my grandpa's dead along with all of you," she told fans on Instagram. "I still feel special."

Fans quickly pointed out that the actress shared a major spoiler on social media, Hyland apologized and explained. "Oh yeah, I guess I should have put a spoiler alert for Grandpa Frank dying, but I was just caught off-guard," she added. "As his granddaughter, you'd think I'd be invited to the funeral."

Grandpa Frank was played by Fred Willard. He appeared in 14 episodes throughout the show's 11 seasons. Back in 2010, he landed an Emmy nomination for outstanding guest actor in a comedy series for his work as Grandpa Frank.
