President Donald Trump will address the nation from the Oval Office at 9 p.m. on Tuesday (January 8) to discuss the situation at the border between the United States and Mexico. On Monday, Trump said in a tweet announcing his primetime address, that there is a "Humanitarian and National Security crisis on our Southern Border" and is demanding $5.6 billion dollars in funding to build a border wall.
As a result of Trump's demand and the Democrats united stance against it, the government has been partially shut down for nearly three weeks because Congress was unable to pass a budget that Trump would sign into law.
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer will deliver the Democratic response to President Trump's speech. Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders will also deliver a rebuttal that will be broadcast on YouTube, Facebook, and Twitter.
