Extended Security Updates Program:

What if you're just not ready to upgrade? Microsoft does have a temporary solution for you with the Extended Security Updates (ESU) program. This will allow you to get security updates for the next year, as the program is currently only set to last until October of 2026.

There are two options most users are likely to use to take advantage of the ESU program.

* The first is to pay the $30 fee for the ESU program for one year of security updates to Windows 10.

* The second way is free, with a catch. You will need to sign up for Microsoft's OneDrive online backup program and sync your settings and files. OneDrive backup is free if have 5GB or less of files. Over that, there's a charge for extra storage. The upside is that your files are protected with the online backup either way.

How to Sign Up for Either ESU Option:

You'll need to make sure you're running the latest version of Windows 10, version 22H2. You can check your Windows version in Settings. Then, you'll click Windows Update, after that you select View Update History.

Once you're sure you're up to date, visit Settings and Windows Update again, and look for the links in the top-right corner of the interface. It should read, "Windows 10 support ends in October 2025" and "Enroll in Extended Security Updates to help keep your device secure."
