Republican North Carolina Rep. Tim Moore shared a video revealing hidden staircases and passageways under the U.S. Capitol, dating back to the building's original construction in the 18th century.

Moore showed off the Lincoln Room in the Capitol, where Abraham Lincoln used to read letters when he served as a congressman, and unveiled a hidden staircase beneath the floorboards of the room.

According to Capitol building lore, the staircase under the Lincoln Room was reportedly used by British soldiers during the War of 1812 to set fire to the historic building.

The U.S. Capitol's construction began in 1793, with President George Washington laying the cornerstone, and the original building was completed in 1826, with subsequent expansions over the years.
