The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission confirmed the first fatal black bear attack in state history, involving 89-year-old Robert Markel and his dog.
Markel's remains were found near his home with evidence of a physical encounter between a bear and a person, along with signs of a bear entering the home.
FWC personnel killed three adult male bears weighing 207, 263, and 434 pounds as part of the response to the fatal black bear attack.
DNA evidence linked the 263-pound male bear to Markel, his home, and the dog's body, with the victim's DNA found in the bear's stomach.
