Most everyone knows about portable battery chargers. They feature a battery inside to top off your phone while on the go.

But did you know there's something like that for your tires?

These devices look vaguely like a thicker version of those portable phone chargers. That's because they have a tiny air compressor inside.

Battery tech has come far enough that these small compressors can refill your car tire when its running low. That's great when you notice it in your driveway or a parking lot where a gas-station tire inflator isn't available.

Most can be used on everything from basketballs, bicycles, motorcycles, and typical sedan car tires. I like having it in my car to not top off its tires, but also making sure my bicycle tires are filled properly when I take my bike to one of the Cleveland Metropark trails.

So what about cost? You can find these available in the $50 to $100 price range. If the only places you can find to fill your tires is one of those gas station compressors that wants cash or credit, then this could actually save you money in the long run.

What do I need to look for? When shopping, make sure to confirm what tire range the portable inflator supports. Most near the $50 range are good up to a typical sedan tire. But the more expensive models will support your larger pickup truck tires as well. That works in the other direction as well. You can find portable compressors small enough and lightweight enough to fit in your bicycle bag so you can take it with you closer to the $70-$100 side.
