Consumer confidence has begun to melt in the summer heat, according to new data from The Conference Board.

The board's consumer confidence index dropped slightly to 100.4 in the month of June, down from 101.3 the previous month.

Economists say the dip shows consumers are "hesitant, but not overly concerned" about the economy.

High inflation and the looming presidential election were cited as reasons for the slide.

Consumer spending accounts for about 70% of U.S. economic activity.
