A group of five bicyclists in Washington over the weekend had a run-in with a cougar that put one of them in the hospital.

The attack happened on Saturday northeast of Fall City, where two cougars corned the group, according to Washington Fish and Wildlife officials. Although one of the cougars ended up taking off, the other attacked one of the cyclists – an unidentified woman – leaving her with serious injuries to her face, neck and jaw, authorities say. She was rushed to a nearby hospital, per Wildlife officials, who euthanized the animal.

While cougars are common in the area, attacks on people – especially groups of people – are rare, one expert says. “They’re very cautious,” he says. “And they’re usually staying hidden.”
