A dog that went missing in Colorado in 2020 has been reunited with its owner – after it was found more than 500 miles away.
The dog, Patches, was staying at the home of his owner’s friend after her owner, Benjamin Baxter, got a job in Nebraska, he says. He was planning on sending for Patches as soon as he got settled – but before that could happen, the dog took off. “She’s kind of been a Houdini her whole life, and we had ventured all over the country together,” Baxter says. “So for her to run away chasing butterflies or rabbits, it wasn’t uncommon. But she always came home. By day seven, I was like, there’s just no way, I’m never going to find this dog again.”
Baxter had completely given up when he received a surprising phone call recently: Patches had been picked up as a stray in Anthony, New Mexico, and was in a Los Cruces animal shelter. “I’m looking through these pictures. I’m like, this is my dog,” says Baxter, who adds he has no idea how Patches spent the last four years or her life. “I have thought this dog has been probably dead for the last four years. And just seeing her was, I mean, mind-boggling. I cannot explain to you how crazy that was
