Saint Nicholas Day is inspired by Bishop Nicolas of Myra who was born in the third century in what is present-day Turkey. The bishop was known for protecting children, widows, and vulnerable people, and for being a kind and generous man. Saint Nicholas is said to be the saint who inspired the legend of Santa Claus. Stories say that he gifted dowries to help girls get married and brought three children back from death. Based on these legends, he's recognized today as the patron saint of children, unmarried girls, sailors and merchants. When St. Nicholas gifted dowries, he supposedly did so by dropping them into the girls' shoes at night. When we celebrate St. Nicholas Day, we can follow his lead. Give small gifts that can fit in a shoe or a stocking
