The Department of Justice had given Texas a 1 p.m. Monday deadline, but Gov. Abbott refused to have them removed, saying "Texas will see you in court, Mr. President"

Texas governor Greg Abbott was sued by the US Department of Justice yesterday for refusing to remove floating barriers installed in the Rio Grande to block migrants crossing from Mexico. Large plastic buoys placed earlier this month near the city of Eagle Pass illegally obstruct navigation on the river, according to Jaime Esparza, the US attorney for the Western District of Texas.

Abbott had earlier sent a defiant letter to President Biden accusing him of failing to enforce immigration laws and causing a “record-breaking level of illegal immigration” despite a recent drop in border crossings. About 100,000 migrants were apprehended in June, a drop from record levels earlier in the year after the Biden administration tightened restrictions following the end of pandemic measures. The lawsuit said that Texas needed permission from the Army Corps of Engineers to place any structure or barrier in the Rio Grande.
