A 12-year-old New Zealand boy is dead after he reportedly huffed a can of deodorant outside a shopping center.
The unidentified youth was inhaling the aerosol fumes from the can when a concerned adult admonished him for taking such a risk, according to a spokeswoman for the coroner’s office. The boy then started to run across the road, still huffing, and collapsed, the rep says. “Members of the public and ambulance staff tried to help him, but he could not be revived,” she says.
A recent study by NIDA’s Monitoring the Future found that 21.7 million Americans over the age of 12 have used inhalants at least once in their lives.
