In what officials are calling a "once-in-a-generation" event, the West Coast has received an unprecedented amount of snowfall this week.
In California, thousands were left without power as a winter storm left several feet of snow on the state's mountains and forced the closures of Yosemite and Joshua Tree national parks, according to the National Weather Service. In Oregon, Portland saw its second snowiest day in history with about a foot of snow, forecasters say. Even Phoenix received a dusting of snow early Thursday as temperatures dropped down to a practically-unheard-of 36 degrees, per the NWS.
“This rain and snow bucked the trend, and it’s highly unexpected,” says meteorologist Ryan Maue. “It’s like once in a generation.”
