After somehow going unnoticed for more than 3 million years, a giant prehistoric shark tooth has been discovered on a Maryland Beach.

The tooth -- which scientists say belonged to a Megalodon -- was found Christmas morning on a beach in Solomons by a 9-year-old girl named Molly, authorities say. Her parents then drove her and the tooth to the Calvert Marine Museum, which confirmed the fossil's authenticity.

Megalodon sharks -- which were among the largest predators in Earth's history -- went extinct about three-and-a-half million years ago, experts say.
