California Declares Power Grid Emergency As Electricity Use Soars

California officials on Monday declared a power emergency as record temperatures continue to push the state's grid past its limit.

With temperatures reaching 110 degrees in the country's largest state, residents have been turning down their thermostats to cope with the record heat -- pushing consumption of electricity to its highest level since 2017, says Elliot Mainzer, chief executive officer of the California Independent System Operator.

"Rotating outages are a possibility today," Mainzer said Monday morning. "We are now moving into the extreme part of this heat wave. If voluntary conservation measures fall short Monday, CaISO will declare a level-two grid emergency."
