Mikhail Gorbachev, the former Soviet leader who oversaw the end of the Cold War, has died at the age of 91.
Russian news outlets say Gorbachev died after "a severe and prolonged illness".
Gorbachev was the final leader of the Soviet Union, taking office in 1985 through the dismantling of the Iron Curtain in 1991. He became famous for his interactions with Presidents Ronald Reagan and George H.W. Bush, as well as British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher.
After leaving office, he was an outspoken activist for nuclear disarmament, as well as environmental and economic concerns.
