Uvalde school shooting survivor throws out the first pitch at an Astros game on the same night she learns that she’s getting a new house. While she was in the hospital for over two months after being shot multiple times in the May 24th massacre at her elementary school in Uvalde, Texas, Mayah Zamora learned that the gunman lived just blocks from her house. So when the ten-year-old was finally released from the hospital, she didn’t want to go back to her old home.
When MLB All-Star and former Astros short-stop Carlos Correa heard about everything that Mayah has been through, he asked his nonprofit the Correa Family Foundation what they could do to help her. They invited Mayah to throw out the first pitch at the Astros / Twins game and after Mayah was presented as the “Hero of the Month” at the game, the foundation announced that numerous donors had come together to fund the building of a new fully-furnished home for her family in a location that would make her more comfortable.
Correa’s foundation was initially started to help children with cancer, but they also support families impacted by other serious hardships. Mayah’s new house is being built through a collaboration between the foundation, Puerto Rican musician Bad Bunny, and the founders of metaverse company TokenSociety.io
