COLUMBUS, Ohio (WTVN)--A new law designed to protect Ohioans living in nursing homes is now in effect.

"Esther's Law" took effect Wednesday. It allows relatives of nursing home residents to set up cameras in their rooms, in order to catch abuse.

The law is named after Steven Piskor's mother, Esther, who was being abused at her nursing home, and a camera placed in her room by Steven captured the abuse. Two nurse assistants pled guilty to the abuse in 2011.

Lawmakers are looking at expanding the law to include assisted living facilities and group homes.

States like Illinois, Minnesota, Texas, and New Mexico also allows cameras to placed in nursing home rooms.
