Greg Newsome II Spoke to the Media Today 11/1/21

On how much takeaways are emphasized during the week and what will it take for the Browns defense to get more takeaways:

“We just have to stay the course. Every single day at practice, it is stressed emphasizing just trying to get the ball out. It is eventually going to come. You just have to stay the course.”

On if it helps that defensive coordinator Joe Woods tracks how many times players in practice try to knock the ball out and cause takeaways:

“It will definitely pay off. Like I said, we just have to keep doing it at practice, and then hopefully, it translates to the games. We just have to stay the course, and some of those balls will eventually come out.”

On how tough it was when S John Johnson III left the game due to a neck injury:

“It is really tough. He is one of the captains on the defense, but luckily, we have other great players who can kind of get in there and maybe obviously not be the same production as a John Johnson – you can’t replace a player like that – but we have (S) Grant Delpit, who is very talented, as well. It definitely hurt having JJ out, but Grant Delpit stepped up and made some plays when he needed to.”

On what Johnson means to the Browns defense:

“He is an energy guy. He is always positive, which is good. Whenever we have a bad play or something like that, he is always the one who keeps the energy up and keeps the guys smiling and laughing. He is definitely a great captain out there.”
