COLUMBUS, Ohio (WTVN)--The Ohio Senate was busy on Wednesday, passing three different bills of significance, which now await approval from the Ohio House.
Substitute House Bill 126 is also known as "Collin's Law", named after Collin Wiant, a student at Ohio University, from Dublin, who died in 2018 in an alleged fraternity hazing incident. The bill strengthens penalties for hazing on college campuses.
The death of Stone Foltz at Bowling Green State University in March of 2021 also brought attention to the issue.
Senate Bill 176 will legalize sports betting in Ohio. The bill would allow three types of betting licenses: one for brick-and-mortar locations like casinos and racinos, one for placing bets with mobile apps, and one to install betting kiosks at bars.
Senate Bill 187 will allow college student-athletes in Ohio to profit from the use of their name, image, and likeness. Multiple states have passed similar legislation, and Ohio State Football Coach Ryan Day testified in favor of the bill, saying it's needed for Ohio's college and universities to compete with other states.
