(Cleveland) - The Cleveland Metropolitan School District, and the Cleveland Teachers Union on Monday evening came to an agreement under which teachers will return to classrooms for hybrid learning. This after union members voted overwhelmingly last Thursday to continue with just remote learning, saying the CMSD had not done enough to ensure the safety of teachers.
The CMSD says it has made efforts over the last two weeks to address any remaining health and safety concerns. CTU President Shari Obrenski says its members were clear they would not return until conditions were safe and appropriate for both students and adults. Obrenski said in a written statement, "Based on the amount of progress that was made since Thursday, we are confident that our school district is ready to move to hybrid learning."
After last Thursday's meeting, Cleveland Mayor Frank Jackson, and American Federation of Teachers President Randi Weingarten worked with the school district and the union to come up with a resolution.
Students in Phase 1 will be the first to return for hybrid learning on Friday, March 12. That includes students with learing disabilities, potentially off-track seniors, and off-track career tech students. Other students will be phased in.
