(Columbus) - An example of how things are slowly getting back to normal after the pandemic. Back when people started being laid off or furloughed, utility companies offered to help by temporarily ending customer disconnections for not paying bills.
One of those utility companies is planning to re-institute disconnections. Columbia Gas of Ohio, which serves parts of Greater Cleveland, has a request before the Public Utilities Commission of Ohio to resume disconnections. They began printing disconnection notices on customer bills on May 29, saying it would begin terminations on July 29. The Ohio Consumers Counsel has asked the PUCO to reject Columbia's request.
Dominion Gas, which serves areas not served by Columbia, is still not disconnecting customers. FirstEnergy says on its website they won't be resuming disconnections until at least July 1, but they will comply with state orders.
