Vandals Hit Historic Lorain Cemetery

(Lorain) - Police are looking for the vandals who did thousands of dollars in damage to a historic cemetery.

According to the Chronicle-Telegram, Early Monday morning, someone pulled two headstones from the ground at Charleston Cemetery on Sixth Street in Lorain, and smashed them. One of the stones was a replacememnt for an original one.

Charleston Cemetery was first put to use in 1828. At the time, it was outside the city limits of Lorain, and was used to bury victims of typhus and typhoid fever. It fell out of use over 130 years ago, but in recent years, volunteers have been trying to restore this portion of Lorain County history.
