(Cleveland) - The U.S. Prosecutor's office in Cleveland has announced federal indictments against six area men who were recently arrested by local departments on charges of domestic violence. It's part of a new initiative by the federal courts to try and keep men convicted on domestic violence-related charges from legally owning a gun.
The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) says that 55 percent of all killings involving a female victim are perpetrated by an intimate partner.
“The law is clear: if you have been convicted of domestic violence, even a misdemeanor, or have an active protection order, you are not allowed to have a gun,” U.S. Attorney Justin Herdman said. “Data tells us that more than half of all women homicide victims were killed by their partners. We also know one of the greatest risks for police officers is responding to a domestic disturbance. These indictments will help make our community safer.”
Those Cleveland-area men facing new federal indictment include, William G. Smith of Ravenna, Edward Kennerly of Cleveland, Antonio Stewart of Lorain, Elijah Horder of Cleveland, Steven Kennedy of Euclid and Jason Calton of Liberty Center.
