Shoppers say goodbye to Toys R Us

(Cuyahoga County) - The shelves are almost bare at the Toys R Us on Lorain Road, near The Great Northern Shopping Center in North Olmsted.

Shoppers there are looking for bargains among the great reduced merchandise and remembering the days when the store was stocked with goods.

In a few days it will be closed for good. On September 18, 2017, Toys "R" Us, Inc. filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy, but the company stated that its brick-and-mortar stores and online sales sites would continue to operate.

The company has not had an annual profit since 2013, and reported a net loss of $164 million in the quarter ended April 29, 2017. It lost $126 million in the same period in the prior year.

On March 14, 2018, Toys "R" Us announced that all of its U.S. stores would be closing, ending 70 years of operation; in addition to the stores in the 50 states. Liquidation sales started on March 23, 2018.

Charles Lazarus (October 3, 1923 - March 22, 2018) founded Children's Supermart in 1948 as a baby furniture retailer, which evolved into Toys "R" Us, in Washington, D.C.
