(Cuyahoga County) - The City of Cleveland today announced its intent to purchase 1801 Superior Ave. for its new Cleveland Division of Police headquarters.
The $60 million project will house the headquarters along with several tenant and community spaces. The City also will introduce related legislation to Cleveland City Council today for approval.
Construction is projected for completion in spring 2019.
“The new police headquarters in the downtown neighborhood is one of the many ways we are moving the division into the future,” said Mayor Frank G. Jackson. “We are systematically creating the necessary technological and logistical infrastructure to reduce crime while being more open and accessible to the community.”
The Superior Avenue location was selected from 24 other proposed sites. This was the former home of the Cleveland Plain Dealer.
In May 2017, the City issued an RFP to solicit the services of a real estate consultant to receive proposals from real estate owners for a modern, advanced, and efficient new headquarters.
The City selected Colliers International as its real estate broker pursuant to the RFP, which assisted with the review of all available properties including new construction, lease and purchase of an existing building of at least 180,000 square feet plus an additional 60,000 square feet of storage at the same or different location.
The City also engaged architects and space planners to conduct a needs assessment and to create a relocation study.
This study guided the selection process by detailing existing needs, future growth areas, and specifications for the built environment.
After exhaustive review of available options and the fine tuning of budget, design, and project scope, the evaluation team determined that purchasing 1801 Superior Ave., the former Plain Dealer Headquarters, would best meet the City’s needs. The property satisfies the City’s program requirements by providing the following:
- 236,160 square feet of office space
- 80,000 square feet of storage
- 631 parking stalls.
The building is located on an 8.1 acre lot, which includes a parking garage, greenspace, and free surface parking for visitors. It is conveniently located in the central business district but just outside of the downtown core.
