(CLEVELAND) With the Democratic and Republican primaries today, Ohioans should have their choice for governor narrowed down to two candidates. Lieutenant Governor Mary Taylor and Ohio Attorney General Mike DeWine will vie for the Republican nomination while a crowded field for the Democrats should turn into a race between former Cleveland Mayor and U.S. Representative Dennis Kucinich and Richard Cordray, former head of the U.S. Consumer Protection Bureau as well as former Ohio Treasurer and Attorney General.
Baldwin-Wallace political science professor Tom Sutton expects low to moderate voter turnout with only 20 to 25-percent of registered voters showing up at polls for today's primary. Sutton expects DeWine to defeat Taylor with Cordray beating Kucinich, although there is a path for an upset.
"If we see very high Democratic primary turnout in Cuyahoga County, possibly Mahoning and other areas," says Sutton, "we could wind up with a surprise."
Sutton says polls show Cordray with a 16-point lead over Kucinich and DeWine polling at 52-percent to Taylor's 25.
