The first flight from Iceland arrives in Cleveland

(Cleveland) - Flights from Cleveland to Iceland have begun.

Cleveland Hopkins International Airport officials were on hand, as the first WOW Airlines flight officially arrived Thursday at 11:30 p.m.

The plane crossed the tarmac under a ceremonial water cannon salute provided by the Hopkins Airport Fire Department.

Passengers told Newsradio WTAM 1100 they loved the flight, and that the fares are the lowest around for connecting with Europe.

Airport officials welcomed the passengers on the first flight with cake, gifts, and a ribbon cutting at the gate.

The first nonstop flight to Reykjavik left at 12:30 a.m. Friday.  The low-fare airline is offering the first direct flights from Cleveland to Europe since Continental canceled service to London in 2009.
