(GOODYEAR, Ariz.) – The Cleveland Indians announced that they plan to put veteran slugger Jason Giambi on the 15-day disabled list come Sunday.

Manager Terry Francona made it clear that Giambi is on the big league club, however he is still recovering from a non-displaced rib fracture that he suffered on March 7 when he was drilled by an Edwin Jackson fastball during the Indians Cactus League exhibition game in Mesa, Ariz. against the Chicago Cubs.

The Indians will pay Giambi a $100,000 retention bonus once he gets placed on the DL.

This DL situation for Giambi will likely allow the Indians to carry eight pitchers in their bullpen. The final spots open on the 25-man roster include the last spot in the starting rotation as well as two bullpen jobs.

The Indians open the 2014 season on Monday, March 31 in Oakland for a three-game series with the Athletics.
