University of Texas Began Removing Confederate Statues

INJOWith only 10 days before classes are back in session, the University of Texas at Austin began removing Confederate statues in the middle of the night on Sunday.

The university's president, Gregory Fenves, announced the removal of the statues honoring Robert E. Lee, Albert Sidney Johnston, and John Reagan, explaining that these monuments “run counter to the university's core values.”

The email went out to the student body just before 11 p.m. on Sunday — and crews worked through the night to ensure the statues were completely gone by sunrise Monday morning.

A spokesperson for the university said that the decision to quietly remove the statues in the middle of the night was “for public safety and to minimize disruption to the community.”
