Legendary sumo wrestler Akebono Taro has died at the age of 54.

His family says he died of heart failure earlier this month in Tokyo.

Born in Hawaii, Akebono made history in 1993 as the first foreign-born sumo to become a grand champion, or 'yokozuna', in Japan.

He was known for his massive size, even for a sumo - measuring at 6'8" and 500 pounds.

Akebono was an 11-time grand tournament winner before retiring in 2001.
