(Lorain) Lorain City Council on Tuesday is expected to vote on a proposal to construct a 62-unit apartment building for the homeless. Twelve of the units would be for veterans, exclusively. Laura Boustani with CHN Housing Partners tells us that it is a $20-million-dollar investment into the city's Broadway corridor. If approved, Broadway Commons would be the developer's 12th such facility, with 11 of them throughout Cleveland. Boustani says each tenant would have to sign a 12-month lease and abide by all of the guidelines. She says they've worked with the city to have a police presence and a permanent police sub-station.

She says at all of the other locations they've had great success at helping people get their lives back on track with just 5 percent of the residents returning to homelessness. Adding that "its testament to the fact that housing people, taking care of their housing needs and then serving them in other ways to rebuild their lives really works." Boustani also points out that at the other locations they've seen increased private development move into the neighborhoods, creating greater economic growth. She said if council doesn't approve the project, then they'll lose a $10-million-dollar grant from the state, and some 60 or so people will not have a place to live.
